Lighter nights call for celebration of warmer times with some Middle Eastern inspired dining for you this month. Two sittings - one at 6pm and one at 7:30pm.

We've spent some amazing time in the Balkans, Greece, Egypt, Cyprus, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Oman. The food is a lovely blend of lots of things but flavour is paramount so we'd like to share some of that with you in June.

Pretty sure the majority of customers think I spend all day with my head in my phone, when in reality I'm just trying to post a bloomin' pic on our socials 😭

There is an actual sensor on my chair so every time I grab five seconds to do this something happens that means I need to go and do anything else instead 🤣

Today though, the interruptions were gorgeous and the very best kind 😍

A lovely surprise visit from my niece now that she is just about to graduate from uni before heading off to the Far East and Oz for a few months 🫶🏻 and then another lovely visit from our sometimes-still-staff-member Lucy before heading off to Disney Florida for THE WHOLE SUMMER to work 😱

Such amazing opportunities for these younglings at the best time in their lives, continuing their learning journey overseas and opening their minds to different cultures and nations. I'm still waiting on my invite to join them mind 🥺🙄 Maybe one day Bob and I will hit the road again and get back out there to clock up a few more countries to add to our already impressive list 🤔 I wonder if they need a cracking cafe over in Japan? 🙏🏻🏃🏻‍♀️

Next in line for us revisiting our heritage pubs while in Manchester is the Sir Ralph Abercromby. Back in the days before Bob's family adopted the more familiar 'ie' at the end of the surname, his Great Great Great Grandfather Ralph was a lieutenant in the British Army and was stationed in Manchester during the Battle of Portlee that defended the Greater Manchester Port Authority from an invasion by the Irish in 1780.

Such was Grandad Ralph's success, he was named as Commander in Chief of the British Army and later went on to defend Egypt against invasion by the French. He lost his life in that battle but a pub in Manchester was named after him and he has a permanent place in the city's history. The change to 'ie' at the end of the surname came about when the linen traders of Manchester Port ran out of ink writing the 'y', and thus the surname has been Abercrombie ever since. It was those same linen traders who went on to establish a hugely successful clothing company across the ocean in partnership with Albert Fitch to become Abercrombie & Fitch.

In fact, none of the above is true but they do pull an amazingly fresh pint and we're now off to explore more of the random pubs of Manchester on our final night away before heading back home tomorrow 🥹

We've missed you guys and are looking forward to seeing you all again. Our team has done an amazing job in our absence and you lot have kept them all super busy so thank you for that 👍🏻

Well, it's been a strange old Saturday here at The Lass O'Gowrie 🥰 for all the right reasons thankfully.

A refreshing break in the weather wet the fields overnight but the muggy warmth remained. That made for a right old hoor of a sauna in the kitchen today but we braved that just for you guys 😇 cos we're like that you know 👍🏻

We "did" have biscoff cookie sandwiches for you but we got as far as posting a pic and then two of you turned up and bought the lot so 🤷 don't tell anyone but we have raspberry white chocolate ones tomorrow 😉🤫 we're not yet at the stage of limiting you but if you carry on with this bulk buying behaviour we're not ruling it out 😂

Just as we were about to pass out in front of the grill, two lovely customers arrived for cake and coffee and said "oh we LOVED the write up on you The Courier today, congratulations" 👏🏻

It's been a great weekend here. Lots of sunny faces to match the skies outside. Loads going on round about these parts which we are very grateful for as it brings folk into The Shire and we get to show them how lovely these parts are. They're pretty all year round but especially glorious in the sunshine.

Rumours of some rain on the way which is good news for the farmers and the crispy forests and gorse on the hills. All in all, can't really complain at all actually. Even though we're getting a preview of what hell is going to be like in the kitchen at the moment, you guys are still into the soup and coffees so who are we to judge, eh? 🤷

We contacted her yonks ago but Cheryl had the actual audacity to be having a baby and taking time off 🙄😉🤭 so we've had to sit on our hands since then waiting for the wee one to be able dress itself and here we are ♥️♥️

We honestly would have waited longer if need be because Cheryl's talents are worth it. All her own designs and with top class banter thrown in, we have a great selection of tea towels, coasters, mugs, cards, candles, keyrings and magnets 🫶🏻

Our Sophie has been a busy bee this morning doing pretty things with our new retail stock from @castletonfarm 🙌🏻♥️ Their new range of jams, chutneys, vinegars and syrups are all made using produce grown on the farm 🫶🏻 Apparently the syrups are rather nice in a chilled summer cocktail 😉🍸☀️ so why not take advantage of this cracking sunny weather to enjoy a Scottish Berry Bellini 😎 Cheers 👍🏻

We can't even explain how happy we are today having taken delivery of this year's first 🍓 crop from Mains of Errol Fruit Shack 🤸🏻‍♀️💃🏻🙌🏻

We will have strawberries every single day now through the summer so grab a punnet from our retail fridge 👌🏻 we can confirm that they have been through "Quality Control" aka Molly and Ali and have been approved 👀🤭

Of course we will also be using them now in our own cakes so our strawberry tarts will be back from tomorrow as well as fresh cream croissants and Tres Leches x

We love celebrating the proper seasons here so once Errol stops producing then we stop using strawberries 👍🏻 but that's a few months away so get ON IT ♥️🍓♥️🍓♥️🍓♥️🍓♥️

Hello May 👋🏻 it's good to see you 🥹

We've heard a few folk say this week "can't believe it's already May! How did that happen?" Yeah, we feel you. It seems like Half Term, Mother's Day, the clocks changing, Easter and now May Bank Holiday are all just merging into one and if we're not careful we will hear someone mention the "C" word and it will be 2026 🫣😱 #bonkers

What better time then to take a moment to step back and appreciate how far we've come. April was very good to us. VERY good. We didn't stop. You came in your droves. It was our most successful month since we opened the doors. It was a tad tricky behind the scenes whilst we navigated a lot of changes but we're now a shade off of three years old and it feels good 👍🏻

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?

1. Our staff are amazing. We will never stop repeating this. They are the reason we are here. And also the reason why you are here according to our reviews 🥰

2. Our customers are amazing. We will also never stop repeating this 😁 You too are the reason we are here. Thank you for supporting us and for getting what we are about.

3. Some folk. A few. They don't get it. And they never will. 🤷

4. Believe in yourself. We will be the eternal imposters but with such great support from you all we are constantly reminded that you enjoy what we do. So we will keep doing it 👍🏻

5. Cake fixes everything. It's true. Absolute facts. 🙌🏻

We've had a couple of quiet mornings this week and customers walk in and go "oh, I was expecting you to be busier, is everything ok?"

Yes. Everything is ok. Really ok. 👌🏻

The quiet times are when we get stuff done. All the stuff that waits patiently on a list, staring at us while everything else is whirling round about it and so the stuff gets ignored.

The calm. Before the storm. After the storm. Sometimes right in the eye of the storm. But storms pass and calmness reminds us that everything happens for a reason. Thank you to everyone who supports us and believes in us. It does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

Thank you to our friends at Harvest Brae for sending over this lovely photo of their orchard. We are patiently waiting for the 2025 harvest of these delicious apples so we can bring you more of our exclusive single variety Apple Juice 🙏

Like most things to do with our business, choosing our name was a lengthy and potentially over-deliberated process 🙄 but we wanted to make sure it meant something to us and also to our customers. Naming ourselves after a variety of apple that was discovered here in Errol was to represent our commitment to the local community and other local producers and suppliers.

Here at The Lass O'Gowrie - Scotland we like to offer you the opportunity to experience a cafe that cares about its customers and is interested in getting to know you better (if that's what you want 😂) Every penny spent with us is an investment in our locally employed staff, many of whom are experiencing their first ever job. We are in a privileged position and we don't take running our own business for granted and we certainly don't take our customers or suppliers for granted. We fulfilled a long held promise to venture out of the Shire for the night on Wednesday and headed to the bright lights of Glasgow. Our destination? @soups_on_and_the_cake_lady of course!

We've been tossing social media love bombs for months now and the emergence of a fantastically deprecating online review by the now infamously barred Daniel led our paths to cross through an outstretched hand of "fellow small cafe owner here" "we understand"

And so we finally got around to getting our bums on seats for one of their sold out supper clubs. Quite possibly the first ever case of proper soup envy from the starter of Tomato and Roast Pepper 😋 Naturally, we had to pick different mains and puds so we could try everything 🤦 Tuscan Sausage Stew was like a big old hug from your favourite granny and a crustless chicken, leek and bacon quiche made us forget the monsoon outside and imagine a Mediterranean horizon with a glass of punchy red.

Hands down the best blackberry pavlova in the universe and the raspberry white chocolate tart almost rendered us speechless, which for us is QUITE the thing as you all know 😉

Plenty of time yet for the online banter to recommence but this is no time for sarcasm and wit. Get yourselves to Cathcart pronto. Dead serious. Tell Pete and Anne we sent you. Not in a sinister debt collecting way obvs 🫢 in a "you're a fool if you don't" sort of thing. Capeesh 👌

The first ever youngling we employed here at The Lass was a shy lad called Sandy. He didn't even apply. His big sister did but she took another job in the bright lights of the city where she was going to uni instead. Roger was Sandy's dad.

Roger was in for coffee one day and was joined by Sandy off the school bus. Roger thrust this young lad at us and told us he needed work. I looked Sandy in the eyes and told him I just had two rules for staff. (1) Do your best and (2) don't ever be dishonest.

Sandy started that weekend. He was just 14.

Roger and I had been friends since we first moved to Errol in 2012. We shared many similar interests including an obsession with the English language and pedantic grammar. He used to cycle down with the family to our previous cafe and was a huge supporter of what we were doing and appreciated how hard we worked to make it a success. Sandy was way too young in those days to consider working with us. If anything great came out of our move to the High St it was Sandy being tall enough by that time to reach the dishwasher.

Along with Sandy came his best friend Benji as a package deal. And so The Lass O'Gowrie embarked on some of the best years of our lives. Sandy and Benji didn't 'just' do dishes. They kept us entertained. They made us laugh more than was probably safe in a kitchen environment. Occasionally they did dishes. They both progressed to front of house and are permanent members of The Lass O'Gowrie Hall Of Fame.

Sandy lost his Dad Roger suddenly in his sleep on Thursday night and what little we can possibly do to comfort Sandy, his mum Jane and his sister Eve we will indeed do. Roger was the driving force behind so much good in the village of Errol and beyond. Words alone cannot do him justice but they are a fitting tribute to a man who loved the English language.

The Lass O'Gowrie is about more than coffee and cake. It's a family that is hurting for Sandy and his family and we send them all so much love and support at this terrible time.

That's the bookings open for our Vegan Meal Night on Friday 25th April. There are two half sittings - 6:30pm or 7:30pm. If we get enough interest we can move the first sitting back to 6pm and book two full sittings :-) :-o

It's a poignant time for us as we've just had a super busy weekend for Mother's Day and that was absolutely amazing but today marks 7 years since we lost Mum Abercrombie so tonight we are raising a glass to one heck of a lovely mum ♥️

The pungent aroma will be soon be wafting through the woods and these delicious leaves can be used in everything from soups to salads, pesto and savoury baking. We will be making a fresh batch of Ali’s Alliums soup this week with it and you might even get some Scottish Cheddar and Wild Garlic Scones 🤤

To get your hands on this, you usually need to get out and about in the woods for a ramble and take your chances that you’re not finding the 😱 poisonous Lily Of The Valley, so if you are not into clambering around in the undergrowth for some risky harvesting, then let us help 👍🙏🏻
